Sartre once asked: “What can literature do for hungry children?” Today the question becomes: “What can art do in the face of planetary collapse?”Sartre fragte einst: „Was kann die Literatur für hungernde Kinder tun?“ Heute stellt sich die Frage neu: „Was kann die Kunst angesichts des planetaren Kollapses tun?“Sartre demandait : « Que peut la littérature pour des enfants qui ont faim ? » Aujourd’hui, la question devient : « Que peut l’art face à l’effondrement planétaire ? »
FLAM is one practical response to this question.FLAM ist eine praktische Antwort auf diese Frage.FLAM est une réponse concrète à cette question.

Annual graduates from Japanese higher music educationJährliche Absolventen der musikalischen Hochschulbildung in JapanDiplômés annuels de l’enseignement musical supérieur au Japon
Fewer than 5,000 students graduate from Japanese higher music education each year—and the number keeps falling. Most cannot make a living from performance alone; many drift away entirely. Pianists who chose not to pursue a soloist career still anchor the music world, yet they have almost nowhere to perform, gather, or belong. FLAM's work begins from this reality.

Salon ProgramSalon-ProgrammProgramme des salons
The Salon is where musicians and citizens meet as equals. Mini-concerts and lectures spread familiarity with classical music from the grassroots, while musicians, music lovers, artists of other disciplines, and practitioners from education, welfare, medicine, the environment, and community-building talk deeply about where art and society meet. Salons are planned bimonthly, based in Kisarazu and central Tokyo.

International CompetitionInternationaler WettbewerbConcours international
Modern competitions increasingly reward measurable perfection, penalizing risk and filtering out original artistic voices. FLAM is designing a new space where world-class artists judge by deep musical insight. It is both a contest and an education—offering young musicians direct mentorship from leading artists.

Future of Life, Arts and Music

In the twenty-first century, conflicts continue across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. Refugees and displaced people grow in number; mutual distrust and social division deepen. Climate change, resource depletion, and widening inequality threaten the very foundations of human life. Sartre once asked what literature could do for hungry children. Today that question confronts us in a more urgent form: what can art do in the face of planetary collapse?
This organization is founded as one practical response to that question. Music binds people together across languages and borders and sustains the spiritual foundations of society. In an age of deepening division and hostility above all, music stands among the most certain symbols of peace we have—proof that human beings can still listen together, breathe together, and share a space together. What is needed today is a framework that delivers this power to society in an organized, sustained way.
Our name, FLAM, stands for Future of Life, Arts and Music. The word order expresses the structure of our philosophy. The starting point is Life—daily existence, living things, and an awareness of the global environment. Upon that soil stand the Arts, and through the concrete practice of Music we create points of contact with society. To begin from a gaze upon everyday life, and to reconnect society and humanity through the power of the arts—this is the core of our philosophy.
In Japan, the number of graduates from institutions of higher music education—music universities, junior colleges, and graduate schools—declines year by year, and now falls below 5,000 annually. Yet the artistic cultivation and performance skills acquired through professional training remain a precious foundation of each person's inner life, whatever their professional path. Making a living from performance alone is extremely difficult, and many give up the professional route. Pianists who did not choose a soloist's career nonetheless remain essential pillars of the musical world—yet opportunities to perform or gather with kindred musicians are scarce, and many drift away from music altogether.
This organization therefore makes the creation of a true place to belong—ibasho—for such musicians one of the pillars of its work. Through concert-hall access support and open-call recitals, we secure opportunities for professionally trained musicians to perform before audiences. Throughout the year we hold lectures, workshops, and exchange events, forming a network in which musicians, teachers, learners, and citizens learn from one another. We also address musicians' working conditions—fair compensation for performance, and information and partnerships that broaden professional possibilities in adjacent fields such as education, welfare, and community development.
In piano education, existing organizations have long contributed to raising standards. Building on that legacy, we pursue further development: systematic curricula led by instructors of deep performance experience and artistic insight; masterclasses and pedagogy seminars with leading performers and educators from Japan and abroad; and ongoing forums for instructors to share knowledge. We also work to bring the piano and other instruments into the daily lives of more people, improving access and environments for playing.
We are equally committed to research on music and the arts, and to sharing its results with society. Through inquiry from historical, aesthetic, and social perspectives, we seek to clarify the relationship between the arts and society and the role music education should play—publishing papers and source collections, and holding lectures and symposia for the general public.
Another undertaking we hold dear is the Salon, where musicians and citizens meet as equals. Through mini-concerts and lectures, the Salon spreads familiarity with classical music from the grassroots, while creating sustained opportunities for musicians, music lovers, artists of other disciplines, and practitioners from education, welfare, medicine, the environment, and community-building to talk deeply about where art and society meet. The creation and expression of artists cannot be separated from the realities of society and the questions latent within it—this conviction is a pillar of our philosophy, and the Salon's two-way exchange is where it is put into practice.
These activities should not be confined to any one city. We will establish regional hubs—branches—across the country, gradually extending a network of education, performance, and salons. Each branch, rooted in the climate and culture of its own region and connected with the others, will help build an organic, wide-reaching foundation for musical culture.
Our members have built deep relationships with musicians across Europe—Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Austria, and Finland among them—and the United States, with long-standing ties of trust to conservatories, academies, and performing organizations. Drawing on this international network, we will run mutual exchange programmes with European institutions, support participation in summer academies and masterclasses, and assist young musicians studying abroad. We promote two-way international exchange, including presenting Japanese musical culture overseas.
We also hold a clear conviction about international competitions. As competitions have become institutionalized as vast spectacles, the value of music itself has receded in the judging process; measurable indicators—technical perfection, the fewness of deductions—take precedence. Evaluations converge toward the middle, and original artistic expression struggles to receive its due.
We envision a new kind of competition, in which world-class artists judge performance on the basis of musical insight and artistic sensibility. It is a place of competition and, at the same time, an educational opportunity in which young musicians receive artistic guidance of the highest level. We aim to realize a competition that gives fair recognition to the diverse musical individuality that uniform standards cannot contain.
As set out above, beginning from an awareness of life and daily existence, this organization will advance its programmes—education, performance, research, the Salon, and international exchange—through a nationwide network of branches: contributing to a cultural foundation built on exchange between musicians and citizens, to the public communication of scholarly research, and to the development of classical music through international cooperation.
Music is a symbol of peace, testifying that even in a divided world human beings can still touch one another's inner lives. The international, cross-generational solidarity of those who love music can restore connections now being lost among the world's diverse peoples, carry inherited traditions into the future, and bring harmony to the world. This organization aspires to contribute concretely to that work.
To nurture artists who remain of use even in the face of planetary collapse—judging that legal incorporation is indispensable for pursuing this goal in a continuous and organized way, we hereby apply for the establishment of a specified nonprofit corporation.
March 21, 2026 — FLAM, Future of Life, Arts and Music
Unser Name FLAM steht für Future of Life, Arts and Music.
21. März 2026 — FLAM, Future of Life, Arts and Music
Notre nom, FLAM, signifie Future of Life, Arts and Music.
